The island state of Cuba in the Caribbean with its capital Havana covers 109,884 km² and is part of North America. This includes around 4,195 small and tiny islands or archipelagos, which make up only 5% of the total area. The Canarreos archipelago consists of a group of around 350 islands in the south-west of the main island; the two largest are Isla de la Juventud (2,204 km²) and Cayo Largo del Sur (37.5 km²). Cuba borders the Gulf of Mexico to the north-west, the Atlantic Ocean to the north-east and the Caribbean Sea to the south. Together with the other three main islands of Jamaica, Hispaniola (with the two states of Haiti and the Dominican Republic) and Puerto Rico, Cuba is part of the Greater Antilles archipelago.

History

Christopher Columbus (1451-1506) discovered the island on his first voyage, landing in the Bay of Bariay in October 1492 and taking possession of it for Spain. After the end of the Spanish-American War, Cuba became independent in 1898. Since the victory of the revolutionaries in 1959 under the leadership of Fidel Castro (1927-2016), who then served as head of government and president until 2008, Cuba has been run under an authoritarian communist one-party system.

Viticulture

Cuba has a marginal tropical climate, which is why there is very little viticulture. In 2021, the vineyards covered 1,685 hectares and the wine production volume was 131,000 hectolitres. The country is primarily known for its cigars and, in terms of alcoholic beverages, for its rum (sugar cane schnapps). The international drinks multinational Bacardi-Martini Limited has its origins in Cuba.

In the western region of Pinar del Río, the main tobacco-growing area, some Chardonnay is cultivated, which is also used to produce Cuban wine. Cubans mainly drink their national drink or beer. Most wine is imported from Spain in 10-litre containers, but there are also bottled wines from Spain, Italy, France, Australia and Chile.
