In Italy, a large balloon bottle (demijohn) made of mostly glass with a volume of 28 or 54 litres, wrapped in raffia, into which "vino sciolto"(open wine) is bottled and sold "over the street". The vessel is also used for olive oil. The French equivalent is called Dame-Jeanne (see there for the meaning of the name), the Argentinian equivalent is called Damajuana. See also complete lists under the keywords bottles and wine vessels.

I have great respect for the scope and quality of the wein.plus encyclopaedia. It is a unique place to go for crisp, sound information on terms from the world of wine.
