Danugue

The red grape variety originates from Spain. Synonyms are Barlantin, Danugue Croquant, Danugue Noir, Danyugyu, Espagnin, Espagnol Noir, Estevao Marinho, Figoniere, Gros Guillaume, Gros Guillaume de Nantes, Gros Guillaume Noir, Gros Plant, Gros Plant de la Barre, Imperial, Merveille de Vaucluse, Mervia Noir, Mervina Noir, Panse Noire, Pennington Hall Hamburg, Pense Noire, Plant de la Barre Rouge, Raisin Turc, Spagnol Bleu, Raisin Turc, Valencí Noir, Valencia Tinto, Valenciana Tinta, Valensy and Valensy Noir. According to DNA analyses carried out in 2021, the variety originates from a presumably natural cross between Breval Negro x unknown partner (ex VIVC catalogue). According to other DNA analyses, the father variety is the Spanish Rojal Tinta (personal information from Dr. Jeronimo Rodrigues, University Cape Town, South Africa). It must not be confused with the Valencí Tinto variety (with synonym Danugue) because of synonyms that seem to indicate it. The variety was a crossing partner in the new variety Cabernet Labrusco. It is mainly used as table grape. No stocks were reported in 2016 (Kym Anderson statistics).
