Producer description of "Bio Weingut Diwald"

The "Bioweingut Diwald" is located in the municipality of Großriedenthal in the Lower Austrian wine-growing region of Wagram. The time-honoured farmhouse, rich in tradition, has its origins as far back as the 13th century. The farm was built up by Hans Diwald, one of Austria's organic pioneers, and his wife Paula. Today, the farm is run by son Martin Diwald. The vineyards cover 20 hectares of vineyards in the Alte Weingärten, Eisenhut, Goldberg and Diebsnest vineyards, among others. They are planted with the white wine varieties Grüner Veltliner, Riesling, Chardonnay and Frühroter Veltliner, as well as with the red wine varieties Zweigelt, Cabernet Sauvignon, Blaufränkisch and Pinot Noir.

Biodynamic cultivation is carried out according to the rules of the respekt-BIODYN association. Only organic wines are produced, certified by SGS Austria. This includes soil fertilisation with compost from horse manure and pomace, as well as a year-round cover crop. No pure yeasts are used for fermentation; instead, spontaneous fermentation is carried out using the vineyard's own yeasts. The premium wines include Grüner Veltliner Alte Weingärten, Grüner Veltliner Goldberg and Riesling Eisenhut. The winery is a member of the "Club of European Organic Wine Estates".
