DO

Abbreviation for "Denominación de Origen", the former designation in Spain for quality wine from certain wine-growing regions. An even higher level is DOCa (Denominación de Origen Calificada). In addition, there is the designation Vino de Pago for privileged areas, which correspond analogously to a DO or DOCa classification. They were replaced by DOP with the EU wine market regulation valid from August 2009. However, the old, traditional designations are still allowed in addition. See Quality System. A list of all areas is contained in the keyword Spain.

The glossary is a monumental achievement and one of the most important contributions to wine knowledge. Of all the encyclopaedias I use on the subject of wine, it is by far the most important. That was the case ten years ago and it hasn't changed since.
