The winery is located in the municipality of Atauta (province of Soria) in the northern Spanish region of
Castilla y León. It was founded in 1999 with the construction of a state-of-the-art winery. It is owned by the Avanteselecte Group, which owns eight other wineries in different regions of Spain. Ismael Sanz (vineyard management) and Almudena Alberca (winemaking) are responsible for the operation of the winery, with Eulogio Calleja as oenological advisor. The vineyards cover 15 hectares of its own vineyards, and grapes are delivered from another 30 controlled areas. The areas are spread over 500 plots. Only a special
clone of the Tinto Fino
(Tempranillo) variety is cultivated, which dates back to the
pre-phylloxera period. The vines are on average 120 to 140 years old. Accordingly, the
yields are very low at around 2,500 kg/ha, which results in less than one bottle of wine per vine.
In the four-storey cellar the grapes are delivered to the top level. The processing takes place without pumping by gravity. Depending on the type of wine, different containers with volumes between 1,000 and 10,000 litres made of steel, cement and French oak are used for fermentation and ageing of the wines. In the third level, the wines mature in over 600 barrique barrels (about a third is renewed every year) and the fourth level is used for
bottling. The product range includes various DO
Ribera del Duero red wines, all of which are 100% pure Tinto Fino. These are "Parada de Atauta" (12 months in 50% new barriques from 80 to 100-year-old vines) and "Dominio de Atauta" (18 months in 40% new barriques from 100 to 140-year-old vines), as well as the three site wines
(Pagos) "La Mala", "Llanos del Almendro" and "Valdegatiles" (all three 18 months in 100% new barriques).
