Donzelinho Branco

The white grape variety comes from Portugal. Synonyms are Donzellinho Branco, Rabigato, Terrantes and Terrantez. The old variety was already mentioned in the Douro area in 1531 under the name Donzelyhno, although it is not clear whether the white or red Donzelinho was meant. It must not be confused with the Folgasão (with which it shares the synonym Terrantez) or Rabigato varieties. According to DNA analyses carried out in 2020, it is probably a natural cross between Gouveio (Godello) x Cainho da Terra. With the same parents, Donzelinho Tinto (blue berries) was created, with one parent of it Donzelinho Roxo (red berries). The medium maturing vine is sensitive to frost. It produces simple white wines that are mainly used as blends. The variety is grown in the north-east of the country and is authorised in the Douro and Trás-os-Montes areas. In 2016, 64 hectares of vineyards were designated (Kym Anderson).
