Donzelinho Tinto

The red grape variety comes from Portugal. Synonyms are Donzelinho do Castello, Donzelynho and Tinto do Minho. It should not be confused with the variety Trousseau Noir (Tinta Lisboa). The old variety was already mentioned in 1531 in the Douro area under the name Donzelyhno, although it is not clear whether the white or red Donzelinho was meant. According to DNA analyses carried out in 2020, it is probably a natural cross between Gouveio (Godello) x Cainho da Terra. With the same parents the variety Donzelinho Branco (white berries) was created, with one parent of it Donzelinho Roxo (red berries). The variety is often grown in mixed set in the Northeast, and is authorised in the Douro and Trás-os-Montes areas. In 2016, 34 hectares of vineyards were designated (Kym Anderson).
