Producer description of "Weingut Dr. Randolf Kauer"

The winery is located in the municipality of Bacharach in the German wine-growing region of the Middle Rhine. Founded in 1982, the winery is run by Dr Randolf, who is also a professor of organic viticulture at Geisenheim University. Martina Kauer, a trained restaurant manager, manages the administration and sales. They are supported by their daughters Lena and Anne. The vineyards cover almost four hectares of exclusively steep slopes. These are the individual vineyards Beulsberg (Urbar), Kloster Fürstental and Wolfshöhle (Bacharach), Fürstenberg (Oberdiebach) and Oelsberg (Oberwesel), 95% of which are planted with Riesling , the small remainder with Pinot Noir.

Organic viticulture is practised according to the rules of the ECOVIN organic association. The quality standard is a yield restriction of 50 to 60 hl/ha. The focus is on dry Rieslings that are typical of their origin and variety and have a tangy acidity. They are fermented slowly in stainless steel tanks under temperature-controlled cooling and are stored for a long time on the fine yeast. The basis is formed by the "Kauer Riesling" and the "Spätburgunder Weißherbst TORNADO". The latter was born out of necessity in 2005 due to a stormy weather and has been produced annually since then due to its success. In addition, bottle-fermented Riesling and Pinot Noir Weissherbst sparkling wines as well as oak-aged marc brandies are also produced.
