The winery is located in the municipality Bernkastel-Kues (Bernkastel area) in the German wine-growing region Moselle, The Bergweiler family was first mentioned in the 15th century. In 1911 the estate was owned by Mathias Prüm (1835-1890) divided among his children. One of the heirs was Maria Katharina Prüm (1884-1954), the later second wife of the owner of the winery Zacharias Bergweiler (1861-1934). The estate was built in 1959 by dr. Peter Pauly inherited. After studying business administration and vinological education in Geisenheim he continued the legacy of his grandfather. Various trips to Napa Valley inspired him to build a modern operation. By marrying Helga Berres, the winery Peter Nicolay was integrated. Since 2006, the company is run by its son Stefan Pauly as the owner.
The Riesling vineyards cover 17 hectares of vineyards in the individual layers Old bathhouse at the Doctorberg. Bratenhöfchen. dig. Lay and Matheisbildchen in the Großlage Badstube (Bernkastel); Juffer and Juffer sundial ( Brauneberg ); prelate and podium (Earth); Domprobst and Heaven (Graach); Goldwingert in sole ownership and Würzgarten (Ürzig); Klosterberg and sundial (Wehlen); as Heaven (Zeltingen). Important quality criteria are low yields and selective hand-picking. The wines are gently developed with the aim of preserving the vineyard-typical notes. They are fermented by layer separately in small stainless steel tanks with controlled low temperatures. The diversified Riesling collection includes all quality levels. Hand-picked Beerenauslese, Trockenbeerenauslese and Eiswein are produced in weather-friendly vintages. Bottle-fermented sects are also created. The winery is a member of Bernkasteler Ring and in cooperation Gutskomplizen (five wineries).
