The "German Wine Fund" was founded in 1961 as an institution under public law. Seat of the institution is the "House of German Wine" in Mainz
together with the DWI
(German Wine Institute). The DWF is under the legal supervision of the Federal Ministry of Consumer Protection, Food and Agriculture. According to §37 of the German Wine Law, the institution has the task of promoting the quality of the wine as well as the development and maintenance of the market for the sale of the wine. In addition, domestic and international protection should be achieved by legislation for specified designations of domestic wines. The DWF uses various facilities of the wine industry to fulfill its tasks. These are the DWI and the German Wine Academy
, The financing is provided by contributions from the wine industry through a compulsory levy on the German producers (by vineyard area) and the wine trade (according to purchase volume). The board of the DWF is also the managing director of the DWI.
