The red grape variety originates from Georgia. Synonyms are Dzvelchavi Obtchouri, Dzvelchavi Obtshinsky, Dzvelshari Obchinskii and Zelscavi. The name means "old black". It should not be confused with the Dzvelshavi Sachkheris variety. The medium-maturing vine is susceptible to fungal diseases. It produces fresh, dark-coloured red wines of simple quality with red fruit aromas, which are mostly blended with Saperavi. The variety is cultivated in the two areas of Imeretia and Racha. However, no stocks were reported in 2016 (Kym Anderson).
