Major wine-growing area (GI) in the state of South Australia in Australia. There are the subareas High Eden and Springton. The climate is cooler and rainy than in the southern Barossa Valley, which forms the Barossa Zone. The first vineyard called Pewsey Vale was founded by the Englishman Joseph Gilbert (1800-1881) in 1847. The vineyards cover about 10,000 hectares. The main grape varieties are Riesling and Shiraz. Well-known producers in Heggies, Henschke (with the famous Hill of Grace vineyard), Hill Smith Estate, Mountadam, Pewsey Vale and Wolf Blass.
