The red variety (also Édéréna) is a new breed between Merlot x Abouriou, The crossing took place in 1952 in France by the Basque breeder Pierre Marcel Durquéty (* 1923) on behalf of the INRA in collaboration with the university Montpellier, The medium maturing vine yields alcohol-rich, aromatic red wines. It is sold in France on less than one hectare and by a producer in the Swiss canton Vaud grown. In California exist through the University of California and from the Weinmulti Gallo a trial cultivation. In 2010, however, no stocks were reported (Statistics Kym Anderson ).
