Ehrenbreitsteiner

The white grape variety (also Geisenheim 6414-36) is a new cross between Ehrenfelser x Reichensteiner. The cross was made in 1964 at the Geisenheim Research Institute (Rheingau) by Dr. Helmut Becker (1927-1990). The name is derived from the fortress Ehrenbreitstein near Koblenz, or, according to a second version, was formed from the beginning of the mother variety, the middle part as homage to the fortress and the end of the father variety. Plant variety protection was granted in 1993. The variety is resistant to both powdery mildew and winter frost. It yields green-yellow, fragrant and acid-accentuated white wines similar to Riesling. The variety is mainly cultivated in Rheinhessen. In 2018, only 7 hectares of vineyards were reported in Germany with a falling trend (D-STATIS).
