The red grape variety originates from Ukraine, the name means "Black Doctor". Synonyms are Echim Kara, Ekim Qara and Ukjm Kara. It must not be confused with the Kefessiya variety (Doktorsky Chernyi = also Black Doctor). The vine was allegedly introduced by a Russian doctor at the end of the 19th century. The late-ripening vine is susceptible to powdery and downy mildew. The wine is mostly used in blending with the Cevat Kara variety in sweet, fortified wines such as in the branded wine Chorny Doctor or in products from the famous Massandra State Winery on the Crimean Peninsula. No stocks were reported in 2016; in 2010 there were 27 hectares (Kym Anderson).

There is a vast number of sources on the web where one can acquire knowledge about wine. But none has the scope, timeliness and accuracy of the information in the encyclopaedia at wein.plus. I use it regularly and rely on it.
