El Coto de Rioja

The estate is located in Oyón in the Rioja Alavesa sub-region in Spain. It was founded in 1970. The vineyards cover a total of 325 hectares of vineyards in Cenicero in the sub-area Rioja Alta, near the Najerilla river. There are clay soils. The rest of the grapes come from constantly controlled winegrowers in the Rioja Alavesa sub-area. Fermentation takes place at controlled temperature in steel tanks. 78,000 oak barrels made from 80% American and 20% French oak are available for expansion. The average lifespan of an oak barrel is 4.9 years. The red wines are produced with a high percentage of Tempranillo or by type. 23 million kilograms of grapes are processed every year. Six million bottles of red wine mature in the cellars. Around 30% of production is exported to 30 countries worldwide. The premium wines include Coto de Imaz and Coto Real. The “Coto de Imaz Gran Reserva” is made from 100% Tempranillo from the Rioja Alta area. It matures in American oak barrels for 24 months and in bottle for another 36 months. The "Coto Real" is made from the best grapes from old vines with low yield: 10% Tempranillo, 20% Garnacha and 10% Graciano. The three wines are aged for 22 months in barriques with regular bâtonnage. Then they are blended and aged in the bottle for another 24 months.
