The red grape variety comes from Portugal, Synonyms are Espadeiro da Terra, Espadeiro Tinto, Padeiro de Basto and Padeiro Tinto. Despite apparently suggesting synonyms or morphological No similarities with the varieties Camaraou Noir. Manseng Noir (both from France), padeiro. Trincadeira Preta or Vinhão (all five should be confused with the synonym Espadeiro). The parentage is unknown.
The late maturing, high-yielding variety produces light red or rose wines. It is used in the areas of Portugal Beiras. Douro and Rios do Minho respectively. Vinho Verde grown on 237 hectares. In Spain, a variety called Espadeiro occupies 232 hectares of vineyards. According to 2006 DNA analysis this differs from the Portuguese Espadeiro. According to the Swiss biologist José Vouillamoz the Spanish Espadeiro is probably a mix-up with the French variety Camaraou Noir (with the synonym Espadeiro). In 2010 a total of 469 hectares of vineyards were reported (Statistics Kym Anderson ).
