The winery is located in the municipality of Eibesthal near Mistelbach in the north-east of the Weinviertel (Lower Austria). After training as a master vintner and cellarer, the winery has been run by career changer Maria Faber-Köchl since 1998. Daughter Anna Faber is responsible as oenologist. In 2009, a new cellar was put into operation. The vineyards are located in the Saazen, Pannau, Heid, Steinhübel and Sauberg vineyards in a kind of basin location. They comprise ten hectares of vineyards planted with the white wine varieties Grüner Veltliner (40%), Riesling, Pinot Blanc, Roter Traminer, and the red wine varieties Zweigelt, Blaufränkisch, Merlot and Pinot Noir. Certified organic viticulture is practised. This includes, among other things, cover crop, the application of compost and the complete renunciation of artificial fertilisers, herbicides and insecticides.
Only ripe and healthy grapes are carefully processed through selective hand-picking in several rounds. In the cellar, the non-invasive motto is: "as little as possible and as much as necessary". Depending on the type of wine, the wines are matured in stainless steel or barrique. By dispensing with animal fining agents, the wines are in principle vegan. The product range includes light summer wines to site wines. The premium wines include Weinviertel DAC Reserve (Grüner Veltliner) and Köchl Verzeichnis Exclusive White and Red. The cuvées named after Mozart's works"Köchl Verzeichnis 508 - Auf das Wohl aller Freunde" (Riesling, Pinot Blanc, GV) and "Köchl Verzeichnis 507 - Heiterkeit und leichtes Blut" (Zweigelt, Merlot) represent the winery's unique selling point. Around 50,000 bottles of wine are produced annually, some of which are exported to Germany, Cyprus, the Czech Republic and Japan. Other products are the brandy "Robinie", the marc brandy "Quercus" and handmade chocolates in cooperation with Zart.Pralinen Staatz.
I have great respect for the scope and quality of the wein.plus encyclopaedia. It is a unique place to go for crisp, sound information on terms from the world of wine.
