Abbreviation for "Food and Agriculture Organization". This specialized organization of the United Nations, based in Rome since 1951, was founded in 1945 in Québec, Canada. In the German-speaking world, the FAO is also known under the designation "World Food Organization". Members are currently around 180 states and the EU. The objective is to improve the production and distribution of agricultural products in general and food in particular worldwide, to ensure nutrition and improve living standards.
