Abbreviation for "Food and Agriculture Organization". This specialized agency of the UN with headquarters in Rome since 1951 was founded in 1945 in Québec (Canada). In the German-speaking world, the FAO is also known as the "World Food Organization". Currently there are around 180 countries and the EU. The aim is to improve the production and distribution of agricultural products in general and food in particular worldwide in order to ensure nutrition and improve living standards.
