The red grape variety is an interspecific new variety between Black Spanish(Jacquez) x Herbemont. It contains genes from Vitis aestivalis, Vitis cinerea and Vitis vinifera. The hybrid was crossed in 1930 in the USA by the private breeder John Niederauer. But it could also have been a pure Jacquez seedling, which was selected by Niederauer. The vine is mainly cultivated in the USA Gulf Coast region. It is resistant to the vine stock disease Pierce Disease. However, no stocks were reported in 2016 (Kym Anderson).
