The white grape variety comes from Italy. The name refers to the straw-yellow colour of the berries. In 2005, DNA analyses showed a relationship to the Campanian varieties Pellecchiona and Cacamosca. The parentage (parenthood) is unknown. The early ripening vine with sugar-rich berries, mostly grown on pergolas, is susceptible to botrytis. It produces white wines with moderate acidity and aromas of apricots, candied fruit and honey. It is mainly cultivated in Campania, on the Amalfi coast, where it is permitted in the DOC wine Costa d'Amalfi. The vine is threatened with extinction; in 2016 only one hectare of vine area was designated (Kym Anderson).
