The red grape variety is a new breed between Merlot x Raboso Veronese. Synonyms are Cosmo 108, Incrocio Cosmo and Merlot x Raboso 108, and the cross was made in Italy in 1976 by the breeder Italo Cosmo at the Veneto Wine Institute in Conegliano. The medium to late maturing vine produces powerful red wines. It is cultivated in small quantities in the regions of Apulia, Molise, Tuscany, Trentino and Veneto and is used as a blend. In 2016, however, only two hectares of vineyard area were reported with a declining tendency (statistics Kym Anderson).
