Feuerlay

single vineyard (also Feuerley) in the municipality of Boppard in the German wine-growing region of the Middle Rhine. The name is derived from the sun-exposed, hot and stony vineyards and thus special, microclimatic conditions. It is considered the best part of the Bopparder Hamm vineyard, which is also a district of Boppard with the same name. To the west is the single vineyard Mandelstein, to the east the single vineyard Ohlenberg and above it the single vineyard Weingrube. The foot of the Feuerlay slope is only 50 metres from the heat-reflecting Rhine, which has a very positive effect. The south-facing vineyards at 70 to 150 metres above sea level cover 16 hectares of vines. With slopes ranging from 40 to 65% (33°), the site is one of the steepest vineyards in Germany. The soil consists of grey-greenish clay slate weathering with blue-black inclusions and proportions of quartzite and limestone. There is a high proportion of fine soil with good water retention capacity. The Riesling and Pinot Gris varieties are cultivated here. The Didinger, Heilig Grab, Königshof, Müller Matthias, Perll August and Weingart Florian wineries, for example, have shares in the Lahe.
