The communal appellation is located in the Côte de Nuits part of the Côte d'Or and includes areas in the communes of Fixin and Brochon. Fixin was once the summer residence of the Dukes of Burgundy. The single vineyard sites Arvelets, Chapitre, Hervelets, Napoléon (formerly Cheusots), Meix-Bas, Perrière (this monopoly site owned by Philippe Joliet is considered the best) and Queue de Hareng are classified as Premier Cru. Almost exclusively red wines are produced from Pinot Noir with portions of Pinot Gris and Pinot Liébault.
