From the Anglican linguistic area originates the name for a vessel of different volumes in which wine, beer or other liquids were kept. Originally, this was a jug or a beaked flagon. In New Zealand a flagon refers to a glass vessel filled with beer. In Ireland, a flagon usually refers to a two-litre bottle of cider. In Europe, a flagon refers to an oversized bottle with a volume of 2.1 litres. This corresponded to three bottles with the standard volume of 0.7 litres (today 0.75 litres) that was common until the 1970s.
