Flying Winemakers

A term created in the late 1980s by an English wine merchant in the wine world for experienced viticulture specialists. The latter hired Australian cellar technicians for French winegrowers' cooperatives to help with the grape harvest and especially with the winemaking. During the harvest season in northern Europe, southern hemisphere professionals are not very busy and they took advantage of this. This was very successful and the "flying winemakers", most of whom came from Australia or were trained there, have become an international household name. This Australian influence has also had an impact on the techniques and wine styles in many wine-growing regions. One well-known representative is the Australian Peter Bright, who runs the Bright Brothers winery in Portugal and works "on the side" in many countries in Europe, the USA, South America and Australia.
