franconian dry

Name used in the German production region of Franconia for a dry wine with a residual sugar content of up to a maximum of 4 g/l. However, it has no meaning in wine law and, according to German wine law, it may not be used on labels. It is therefore a gentlemen's agreement of the Franconian wine industry to use the term "dry" on the label only if the wine has a maximum residual sugar content of 4 g/l. A similar meaning has Austrian dry in Austria. For the other flavours see under sugar content.

The glossary is a monumental achievement and one of the most important contributions to wine knowledge. Of all the encyclopaedias I use on the subject of wine, it is by far the most important. That was the case ten years ago and it hasn't changed since.
