Fraueler

The white grape variety originates from South Tyrol-Italy. Synonyms are Frauelerrebe, Frauler and Vezzaner. The name could derive from "Friuli". It could be identical to the variety Barthainer (Grüner or Weißer Barthainer), which used to be cultivated in Styria, but this has not yet been confirmed by DNA analyses (picture shows Weißer Barthainer). The medium to late ripening, high-yielding vine is susceptible to powdery mildew and botrytis. It produces acidic, neutral-tasting white wines that are mainly blended with Riesling or Müller-Thurgau. The variety is cultivated in Vinschgau (Val Venosta). In 2016, however, no stocks were reported under the name Fraueler (Kym Anderson).
