The "Reiner & Anke Fries" winery is located in the municipality of Winningen (Burg Cochem area) in the German Moselle wine-growing region. Reiner Fries Sr. was the first winegrower in the village to plant Pinot Noir back in 1986. Reiner Fries jun. studied viticulture at the University of Applied Sciences in Geisenheim before taking over the family business in 1993 together with his wife Anke, already the eighth generation of the family to do so. The vineyards cover six hectares in the mostly steeply terraced Domgarten, Hamm, Röttgen and Uhlen sites. Se are 70% planted with Riesling, as well as Pinot Noir, Pinot Blanc and Dornfelder. The white wines are fermented cool in stainless steel to preserve the primary fruit aromas. Barriques are used for the maturation of the red wines and the Pinot Blancs. The VDP 's model for site classification is consistently implemented. Site designations are only used for the Kabinet wines and for the top Rieslings from the two single vineyards Röttgen and Uhlen. Selections of dry and semi-dry wines are marketed under the name "Apollo-Terrassen" (named after the very rare Apollo butterfly that lives in the terraced vineyards). A speciality of the house are the noble sweet Rieslings. Bottle-fermented sparkling wines, frizzante, grape marc brandy and grape jelly are also produced.
