Gallon

gallon (GB)

Old Anglo-American gauge for liquid and solid materials, which has changed considerably over time. The North American and British gauge block system is based on three different gallons of the original many British gallons. An English gallon (ale gallon) contains 4.546 litres, a North American gallon (wine gallon) 3.785 litres. One gallon equals 4 quarts, 8 pints, 16 cups and 32 gills. Galón was an old measure in Spain with 4.5 and in Argentina and Uruguay with 3.8 litres. See also under hollow measures and units of measurement.
