Ancient Anglo-American measure of liquid and solid matter that has changed greatly over time. The North American and British Hollow System are based on three different of the original many British gallons. An English gallon (ale gallon) comprises 4,546 liters, a North American gallon (wine gallon) 3,785 liters.
