The white grape variety (also Gamay Blanc) originates from France. It was discovered in 1895 in the commune of Gy in the department of Haute-Saône by Émile Gloriod, the gardener who gave it its name. The ampelographer Victor Pulliat (1827-1896) assigned it to the Beaujolais variety Gamay, which gave rise to the name. His colleague Pierre Galet (1921-2019), on the other hand, recognised similarities with the Melon de Bourgogne variety. DNA analyses carried out in 2013 revealed a presumably natural cross between Pinot x Gouais Blanc. No stock was reported in 2016 (Kym Anderson statistics).
