The red grape variety originates from France. Synonyms are Genoillere, Genoilleret, Genoillet, Genouilleret, Genouillet Noir, Genouillet Rouge, Genoyere, Moret Noir and Plant Mercier. It should not be confused with the Mondeuse Noire variety because of morphological similarities. In the past, it was assumed that it could be a descendant of the ancient variety Biturica mentioned by the Roman author Columella (1st century AD), which of course can no longer be verified. According to DNA analyses carried out in 2012, it originated from a presumably natural cross between Gouais Blanc x Tressot Noir. The variety used to be widespread in central France until the phylloxera disaster. It was almost extinct, but since 2005 attempts have been made to revive it in the Quincy appellation (Loire). In 2010, however, no stock was yet recorded (Kym Anderson).
