The state with the capital Atlanta on the South Atlantic east coast covers 153,909 km². It was one of the 13 founding states of the USA. As the sixth largest wine producer in the United States during the 19th century, a flourishing viticulture developed before the American Civil War (1861-1865) on the basis of hybrids. However, the total prohibition of alcohol introduced in 1907 dealt the death blow to viticulture even before the nationwide Prohibition (1920 to 1933). Georgia's modern wine history only began in the early 1980s with the founding of the two oldest wineries, Chateau Elan and Habersham Vineyards. Georgia has since developed into the wine jewel of the South.

The species Vitis rotundifolia (subspecies Muscadinia), such as the historic Scuppernong and Vitis labrusca varieties, thrive particularly well in the hot and humid climate. The most important red wine varieties are Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Noble and Sangiovese, while the most important white wine varieties are Chardonnay, Riesling, Seyval Blanc and Viognier. There is only the AVA area of Georgia, which spans several states. Wine is mainly grown in the north in the foothills of the Smoky Mountains near the gold mining town of Dahlonega. Other well-known producers are Chestnut Mountain Winery, Georgia Wines, Elan Winery, Still Pond Vineyard, Three Sisters Vineyards, Tiger Mountain Vineyards and Wolf Mountain Vineyards.

There is a vast number of sources on the web where one can acquire knowledge about wine. But none has the scope, timeliness and accuracy of the information in the encyclopaedia at wein.plus. I use it regularly and rely on it.
