German Wine Seal

Supra-regional quality mark for German wines whose quality clearly exceeds the minimum legal requirements. It can be applied for on a voluntary basis in addition to the official test number and is awarded by the DLG (German Agricultural Society). The wine evaluation is carried out in the form of a neutral blind tasting by at least three experienced tasters who are very familiar with the respective German wine-growing regions. The seal shows the Roman wine god Bacchus with a grape in his hand. In order to obtain this award, which has been valid since 1984, the corresponding wines must score at least 2.5 points out of a maximum of 5 (compared to 1.5 points normally for quality wines). In addition, the winery is inspected by experts.

Deutsches Weinsiegel - gelb, grün und rot

If the result is positive, the wine seal is awarded in three colours. The yellow seal is awarded for dry wines (max. 9 g/l residual sugar), the green seal for semi-dry wines (max. 18 g/l) and the red seal for sweet wines (max. 20 g/l). Wines that meet the requirements of special regional quality programmes can be awarded the "German Wine Seal Selection" by the DLG. In the past, information on the values of wines suitable for diabetics was provided on the back label. The legal basis for this was withdrawn by an EU regulation from 1.7.2007 (the term diabetic wine may no longer be used).
