The winery is located in the free city of Rust in Burgenland (Austria). The Freihof dates back to the 15th century and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The estate is managed by Erich and Claudia Giefing. Erich Giefing ran the award-winning restaurant "Backstube" in Rust and since the mid-1990s has been fully dedicated to wine growing. The vineyards cover 16 hectares of vineyards in the Bandkräftn, Gemärk, Rieglband, Umriss and Wald areas. They are 90% planted with red wine varieties such as Blaufränkisch (50%), Zweigelt, Pinot Noir, Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and St. Laurent, as well as 10% with the white wine varieties Chardonnay, Furmint, Welschriesling, Pinot Gris and Neuburger.

The oldest vines (Blaufränkisch) are over 60 years old. In the near-natural production, the use of herbicides and insecticides is avoided and the confusing method is successfully applied. Each vine is checked several times from spring to autumn in order to steer it in the desired direction. Shoots are broken off and excess grapes are removed to achieve maximum physiological ripeness. A maximum of six to eight grapes are left on the vine, depending on the growth and characteristics of the vine and the grapes. The resulting average yield is an extremely low 30 hl/ha.

The vinification of the wines is based on the company's philosophy of not producing cheap wines, but wines with an individual style full of character, away from any mainstream, with the taste of the region. Depending on the type of wine, they are aged in stainless steel tanks or barriques. The flagship of the house is the red wine cuvée "Cardinal" (Blaufränkisch, Zweigelt, CS) which is aged for 26 months in new barriques. Other premium wines are Blaufränkisch Reserve, Pinot Noir Cavallo, St. Laurent Reserve and the cuvée "Marco Polo" (Syrah, Merlot, CS). This top line is only produced in particularly good years. The Ruster Ausbruch is also pressed in years suitable for the weather. The artist labels are designed by the painter Gerhard Almbauer. In addition, bottle-fermented sparkling wines (vinegar, vinegar for drinking) are also produced. The winery is a member of the associations Renommierte Weingüter Burgenland (RWB) and Cercle Ruster Ausbruch.
