Gippsland

Wine growing area (GI) 200 kilometres southeast of Melbourne in the Australian state of Victoria, which is part of the Central Victoria zone. It is named after the former governor Sir George Gipps (1791-1847) and is divided into East Gippsland and South Gippsland. The main town is Glengarry. It has a moderate, relatively humid climate. The most important red wine varieties are Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Pinot Noir and Shiraz. The most important white wine varieties are Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc. Well-known producers are Bass Phillip, Nicholson River and Wa-De-Lock Vineyards.
