Trivial name (also glycol) for all glycol compounds; the correct name is ethylene glycol. These divalent alcohols are often used in antifreeze and coolants. The derivative diethylene gly col gained inglorious notoriety through the Austrian wine scandal in 1985 because it was fraudulently added to simple wines to achieve a sweeter late harvest quality.
