Gok Karl Friedrich

The German civil servant, viticultural expert, author and antiquarian Karl Christoph Friedrich Gok, also Gock (1776-1849) was the son of a wine merchant and a half-brother of the poet Friedrich Hölderlin (1770-1843). After various jobs as a town and district clerk, he became a court and domain councillor at the royal court in Württemberg in 1817. He was a founding member and first board member of the "Society for Wine Improvement in Württemberg" and a member of the Württemberg Central Office of the Agricultural Society. Gok is considered a pioneer and promoter of quality viticulture in Württemberg. He published writings on the "grapevine with its species and varieties", as well as contributions to the "knowledge of the characteristics and classification of cultivated grapevines". With a "natural classification system for the more important vine species" he made an important contribution to the natural history of the vine in ampelography.
