Gok Karl Friedrich

The German administrative official, wine-growing expert, author and antiquarian Karl Christoph Friedrich Gok, also Gock (1776-1849) was the son of one wine dealer and a half brother of the poet Friedrich Hölderlin (1770-1843). After various activities as a city and Amtsschreiber he became in 1817 Court and Domain Council at the royal court in Württemberg. He was a founding member and first director of the "Society for Wine Improvement in Württemberg" and a member of the Württemberg Central Office of the Agricultural Association. Gok is considered a pioneer and patron of quality viticulture in Wuerttemberg, He published writings on the "grapevine with its species and varieties", as well as contributions to the "knowledge of the characteristics and classification of the cultivated grapevines". With a "natural classification system for the more important grapevine species" he made in the ampelography an important contribution to the natural history of grapevine,
