Goliath

Designation of an oversized bottle for champagne with a volume of 18 litres or the contents of 24 normal bottles with a volume of 0.75 litres. However, the name is not origin-protected, but can be used freely for sparkling wines or wines. It is derived from the legendary hero of the Philistines. The giant warrior was fatally wounded in the forehead by the shepherd boy David (around 1,040-965 BC) by a stone hurled with a slingshot in a duel and thus helped the Israelites under King Saul to victory.

David later became king of the Israelite dual kingdom of Judah-Israel and was the father of Solomon (972-932 BC); this name is also common. In the past, the name Melchior was also used for still wines of this bottle size. Decanting machines are used for bottles of this size (picture on the right). All oversized bottles are listed under the heading Bottles. See also a complete list under Wine Vessels.
