Gottschelle

Riede in the municipality of Furth bei Göttweig in the Lower Austrian wine-growing region of Kremstal. It was first mentioned in a document in 1341 under the name "Gotschalich". The name has no religious background, as one might suspect, but derives either from "Gute Scholle" (good soil) or "Goetschen" (sharp rocky outcrop). The vineyards cover 15 hectares of vines at the foot of the Göttweiger Berg. The soils consist of weathering and gravel in the subsoil, which is overlaid by layers of loess. The "Loess & Wine" theme trail leads through the "Zellergraben" hollow path, where you can see the mightiness of these loess formations. Here, above all, the variety Grüner Veltliner, which is predestined for this soil type, is cultivated. Shares in the vineyard are held, for example, by the wineries Dockner Josef, Malat Michael, Müller Leopold and Stefan, Unger Petra and Weingut Stift Göttweig.
