Gouveio Real

The white grape variety comes from Portugal. Synonyms are Agodello and Verdelho. It should not be confused with the Godello (Gouveio), Gouveio Estimado or Verdelho varieties, despite the fact that the synonyms or morphological similarities seem to indicate this. According to DNA analyses carried out in 2013, it is one of the many direct descendants of the leading variety Hebén, but the second parent is unknown. However, this is based on only 20 DNA markers (see molecular genetics). The early to moderately ripening, small-berry vine is sensitive to frost and susceptible to fungal diseases such as powdery and downy mildew and botrytis. It produces fresh, fruity white wines with floral aromas. The variety is mainly cultivated in the Douro area (as one of the main white varieties for port wine) and also in the Dão area. In 2016, a total of 581 hectares of vineyards were designated (Kym Anderson statistics).
