DOC area for red wines and white wines in the Italian region of Tuscany. The zone includes the municipalities of Asciano, Monteroni d'Arbia, Murlo and Rapolano Terme, and partly the municipality of Sovicille in the province of Siena. If the grapes come from classified vineyards, Vigna followed by the vineyard name can be indicated on the bottle label.
Rosso (also called Riserva) is made from Sangiovese (max. 60%) and other authorised grapes (max. 40%). The Bianco is made from Trebbiano Toscano and/or Malvasia Bianca Lunga (max. 60%), as well as other permitted grapes (max. 40%). It is also available as Passito and Vendemmia tardiva. The single-varietal wines must contain at least 85% of the respective variety. These are Cabernet Sauvignon, Canaiolo (Canaiolo Nero), Malvasia Bianca Lunga and Merlot.
In the past, you needed a wealth of encyclopaedias and specialist literature to keep up to date in your vinophile professional life. Today, Wine lexicon from wein.plus is one of my best helpers and can rightly be called the "bible of wine knowledge".
