Grand Cru Classé

Collective name for the at the Bordeaux Classification classified in 1855 Médoc wineries with five classes (Premier, Deuxième, Troisième, Quatrième and Cinquième Cru Classé). Companies that are not classified as Premier or at least Deuxième rank among the top label mostly not explicitly, but in the neutral form "Grand Cru Class en 1855". The lesser known Deuxièmes very often indicate their status in order to be known. Baron Philippe de Rothschild in 1973 it was inevitable, the increase from second to first place with "Premier je suis, Second je fus, Mouton ne change" (I am the first, I was the second, Mouton does not change) on that of Pablo Picasso (1881 -1973) to document the designed label. Above all, the "only" classified as fourth and fifth crus châteaux usually omit this in order not to make their "low" rank too obvious. It should be noted, however, that many wineries would very much like to have been “only” classified as Cinquième Cru Classé in 1855. Because the classification, which is over one and a half centuries old, is still very important. See also under Grand Cru,
