Granite Belt

Viticultural Area (GI) 240 kilometres west of Brisbane in southern Queensland in north-eastern . Most Aborigines (indigenous people) live in this state. Viticulture was established by Italian fruit growers who began to press wine from the table grapes that had long been grown here in the mid-1960s. The vineyards cover around 100 hectares of vines near the east coast on a granite plateau that gives the area its name, around the town of Ballandean, at an altitude of between 800 and 950 metres above sea level. The cool climate at this altitude is best suited to the white wine varieties Riesling, Chardonnay, Sémillon, Sauvignon Blanc, Chenin Blanc and Silvaner. The most important red wine varieties are Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz. Well-known producers are Bald Mountain, Ballandean Estate, Bungawarra, Felsberg Vineyards-Winery, Golden Grove Estate, Kominos Wines, Mount Magnus, Mountview, Old Caves Winery, Robinson Family Vineyards, Stone Ridge, Violet Cane and Winewood.
