Grapelade

Trademarked name for a grape jam (artificial word from "grape" and "marmelade") of the US company Welch's. The company was founded in 1869 in Vineland (New Jersey) by Dr. Thomas Bramwell Welch, a physician and dentist from Wales, who created a pasteurised grape juice as the first product from Concord grapes and marketed it as "unfermented mass wine". He is considered the founder of the fruit juice industry in the USA. His son Dr. Charles Edgar Welch (1852-1926) also practised as a dentist at first and then joined the company. He expanded the company and the product range. As a passionate opponent of alcohol and an active member of the Temperance Society, he was predestined to produce non-alcoholic beverages. The "Grapelade" was produced for the first time in 1918 and the first annual production was sold to the US Army. It was used as a troop ration for the American soldiers in France, who then made the product known and popular through their demand after their return to America. Prohibition, which was introduced in the USA in 1920, also ensured high sales figures. As a result, the company, which still exists today, created the products Blackberrilade, Cherrilade, Currantlade, Fruitlade, Peachlade, Plumlade and Strawberrilade.
