Great Southern

Wine-growing area (GI) in the Australian state of Western Australia with the main town of Mount Barker. It is divided into the sub-areas Albany, Denmark, Frankland River, Mount Barker and Porongurup and is part of the South West Australia zone. The landscape is characterised by many eucalyptus trees. It is the southernmost and coolest wine-growing area in Western Australia, which is hot in itself. The cool climate is similar to that of Central Europe. The widely scattered vineyards cover about 1,100 hectares of vines. The most important red wine varieties are Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz, Malbec, Pinot Noir and Merlot, the most important white wine varieties are Chardonnay, Chenin Blanc, Sauvignon Blanc and Riesling. There are about 25 wineries. Well-known producers are Alkoomi, Chatsfield, Forst Hill, Frankland Estate, Galafrey, Goundrey, Howard Park, Jingalla Porongurup, Karrivale, Old Kent River, Pattersons, Plantaganet and Wignall's King River.
