The red grape variety probably comes from Italy, Synonyms are Grechetto Rosa and Greghetto. The exact origin and identity are unclear. It could be one sport of Grechetto di Orvieto to be a synonym for the variety Sangiovese, or act as an independent variety. In the DOC area Colli Etruschi Viterbesi in the Lazio region it is the main variety of a red wine under the local name Grechetto or Greghetto. In 2010 there were larger stocks in the three regions Lazio (14 ha), Umbria (15 ha) and Veneto (14 ha). In total, it occupied 49 hectares of vineyards (Statistics Kym Anderson ).
