Greco Bianco

The white grape variety probably comes from Italy. Synonyms are Greco Bianco di Cosenza, Greco Bianco di Rogliano, Pecorello Bianco and Pecorino. Although it appears to be synonymous or morphologically similar, it should not be confused with Albanella, Greco, Grechetto di Orvieto (Grechetto Bianco), Guardavalle (Greco Bianco di Cirò), Maceratino, Malvasia di Lipari (Greco Bianco di Gerace), Pecorello, Pecorino or Rossetto (Greco Giallo). According to a hypothesis that can no longer be verified, it is said to have been introduced into southern Italy by the Greeks as early as the 7th or 8th century. It is particularly widespread in Calabria, where it is permitted in the DOC wines Cirò, Greco di Bianco, Lamezia, Melissa, Sant'Anna di Isola Capo Rizzuto, Savuto, and Terre di Cosenza. Others are Capri and Fiano di Avellino (Campania), Cori (Lazio), Del Molise (Molise), Frascati (Lazio) and Matera (Basilicata). In 2016, a total of 2,050 hectares of vineyard area were designated with a strong upward trend; 15 years earlier, the figure was 660 hectares (statistics Kym Anderson).
