The winery is located in the centre of the municipality of Spitz on the Danube in the Lower Austrian wine-growing region of Wachau. Built in the 13th century, the Mauritiushof served as a reading farm for the monks from Niederalteich around 600 years ago. The name has its origins in the neighbouring parish church, which is dedicated to St. Mauritius. The historic property came into the possession of the Gritsch family in 1799, and since 2009 it has been managed by Franz-Josef Gritsch, the seventh generation of the family. Five flats are offered for rent. Four, each named after one of the great vineyards of the Wachau, are located in the historic Mauritiushof. One is in the modern Kalmuck cellar (pictured below), whose front is adorned with an innovative glass granulate façade featuring the Kalmuck pattern. While the wine matures and is stored down in the cellar, guests can spend a holiday in the holiday flat "kalmuck LOFT" amidst the unique landscape of the Wachau.

The vineyards cover ten hectares of vines in the Atzberg, Axpoint, Dürnsteiner Burg, Hartberg, Hochrain, Kalkofen, Klaus, Loibenberg, Pluris, Setzberg, Steinporz, Singerriedel and Tausendeimerberg vineyards. They are planted with the white wine varieties Grüner Veltliner, Riesling, Neuburger, Muskateller and Sauvignon Blanc as well as Zweigelt. The selective grape harvest is done exclusively by hand in several passes. Depending on the type of wine, the vinification takes place in stainless steel tanks or in traditional large wooden barrels. The primary goal is to produce natural wines with fresh fruit and varietal character from physiologically ripe, healthy grapes. The premium wines include Grüner Veltliner Smaragd Singerriedel and Riesling Smaragd Tausendeimerberg. Since 2005, there has been the branded wine "Kalmuck Wachau" from the best Spitzer sites. It is named after the "Kalmuck-Janker", a winegrower's jacket with a typical check pattern. The winery is a member of Vinea Wachau Nobilis Districtus.

The glossary is a monumental achievement and one of the most important contributions to wine knowledge. Of all the encyclopaedias I use on the subject of wine, it is by far the most important. That was the case ten years ago and it hasn't changed since.
